Get Your Goals in Order for Fall

Summer can be a busy time for all of us. The appeal of longer days and patio drinks can often cause people to put their goals on the back-burner. At the very least, this is something that I find happens to me. Now that things have calmed down a bit from my very hectic summer, I feel more than ready to reassess all aspects of my health and get back to the habits that make me feel the best.

Take a look back to what you’ve done so far

Before you even start going through the things you want to achieve over the next few months, take some time to celebrate what you’ve already done. Did you get a promotion? Have you saved $2 a day by making coffee at home? Are you working towards a big goal like buying a house? No matter how big or small it is, there is sure to be something you have completed so far this year. CHEERS TO THAT. Do not let the fact that you may have let some things slide off your plate for a few months take away from the things you have achieved. Have a glass of rose with your girlfriend and talk about the awesome things you’ve done.

Reassess your goals

It could be the fact that I work at a college but I always find fall reminds me of new beginnings. After you’ve celebrated the changes you’ve made so far, it is good to start thinking about what you want from your fitness, mental health, friendships, relationships, career and everything in between. Use one evening this week to brainstorm. What are your biggest ideas? Is there something you hope to accomplish in the next ten years? How about over the next year? Try to think of all areas of your life and use this time to not only imagine the lavish lifestyle you are hoping for but ways you can actually get there. Make smart goals, set timelines and print out some motivational quotes to excite you about getting there.

Start small

One of the best pieces of advice I have ever received was to do 1% towards your goal every day. I don’t know about you but when I plan goals I like to be all in all the time. And to be honest, it can get a bit intimidating. This can sometimes lead to people giving up after a month, a week or even a day. After you’ve set some realistic and timely goals that you hope to achieve over the next little while, focus on what you can do every day to get you 1% closer to your goal. If you do 1% a day, that’s 365% closer than you were one year ago. Break things down and take it one step at a time – you’ve got this!

Hold yourself accountable

If there is anything I’ve learned from the last couple of months in my own life, it is that things are so much more rewarding when you have a team behind you. Pick some key players to tell about what you are working towards. Ask them to check in with you and see how you are doing. See if they will join you on a trip to the gym if you are nervous about going or if you just want someone to go with. Having a support system is the most rewarding thing and the greatest part is they can celebrate with you when you achieve your goals. I challenge you to reach out to a friend, family member or partner sometime this week and let them know what you are working towards.
