Tips & Tricks to Change Up Your Diet
Hey friends! So today I wanted to talk a little bit about my recent diet changes I’ve made in the past few weeks that have totally changed the way I meal prep, eat my food, and cook my food! These tips will help you feel fuller for longer periods of time, reduce the amount of added sugar you are consuming and so much more!
1. Avocados are my best friend
So this is probably an obvious one to start off with, but it’s an important one. I’ve always loved avocados, but for a while I stopped incorporating them into my diet because I always found it super hard to find ways to include them in my meals unless it was like avocado toast or guacamole. I didn’t have enough knowledge about what foods went well with them, so I just stopped buying them. In the last 3 weeks, I’ve really started to try to eat an avocado once a day and it has changed how full I feel after eating. For example, before including avocado, I would have two hard boiled eggs I nthe morning, with half a grapefruit and lemon water. By adding in the avocado with the egg, it helps you feel fuller for longer so then I don’t feel like grabbing that granola bar right when I get to work. I’ve also started adding it to my salads (it is bomb with kale, strawberries and cucumbers) and to my quinoa rice with a squeeze of lemon on top! I try to aim for one half in the morning, and the other half at lunch. My only quarrel with avocados is the patience you need to have to let them ripen when you buy them!
Okay this one is a hit or misses for some people. I’ve heard amazing benefits from some, while others can’t stop complaining about the gas and bloating it gives them. Kombucha is a brand new thing for me. What’s kombucha? Kombucha is basically fermented black or green tea. Add sugar to kick-start fermentation, then a scoby or “tea fungus” to complete the process. A scoby is a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast that feeds on the sugar content in the tea. This whole process takes about two weeks and you’ll end up with a fizzy, tangy beverage. I’ve been adding it to my lunches for the past 3 weeks now. I buy the brand GTS Synergy Comsic Cranberry flavoured. I get the flavoured ones because I feel like kombucha is one of those things your taste buds have to get used too. It’s just one of those things; you either love it or hate it. My taste buds have become accustomed to the bitter, fizziness of the drink and I’m really starting to see the benefits of it! my digestion, especially at lunch time, has always been very strange. One day I’ll be fine, the next I feel like I can’t eat anything because I’m so nauseous. I knew it wasn’t anything I was eating because I was eating mainly healthy foods. I see countless Instagrammers drinking kombucha, including HIGSD featured Alena Luciani and Cassie Day so I thought I’d give it a try. Kombucha is rich in probiotics, which help to create a balance in your gut. They can help with digestion, bloating and a whole range of ghastly gut-related issues.
Kombucha also contains antioxidants, which fight free radicals in the body. Basically, they prevent or delay cell damage. And among these antioxidants are vitamins B1, B6 and B12 to improve your immune system. I really recommend it for anyone having issues digesting food, or breaking down their food!
3. Add one vegetable to every meal
This was a tough one for me, and I am still struggling at times. Adding one vegetable to your main meals is super vital! Obviously we know the health benefits of eating vegetables, but what I found really surprising is how full you feel when you do incorporate them into meals. It could be as simple as adding half a cup of broccoli to accompany your chicken and rice, or mushrooms to your pasta dish. I find myself feeling more satisfied when adding something like this to dinner or lunch, plus I feel pretty proud of myself afterwards for actually eating and enjoying them!
