Tips For Staying Healthy During A Career Change
Transitioning to a new role can mean a lot of things, late nights trying to wrap up current projects, long to-do lists to complete and having your head in two places at once all the time. You may start to wonder if you know enough about your new role or worry about how you can create documents about your current role for your successor. Even when change is positive, it can be difficult to manage everything life throws at you.
During this cycle of change, people often forget to focus on the most important person – you. Here are a few easy tips to help focus on yourself during a time of career transition:
Make sure to sweat
With so much on your mind, it can be hard to convince yourself to take a break and exercise. Most of the time this is exactly what you need. Book a spin class with a friend and get lost in the music or find a free moment to collect your thoughts in savasana after a yoga flow. The endorphins alone will increase your mood and give you some extra energy to accomplish your final tasks.
You will probably be invited to going away parties or congratulatory dinners with loved ones. Maybe that extra 10 minutes of sleep is a little easier to sneak in now that you have only a few weeks left in your role so you don’t have time to make lunch. Make sure you always take the time to eat breakfast and prepare some healthy meals for the week. Taking the thought out of what you are going to have for lunch each day will make things much easier to manage. You will also get bonus points for mixing in some veggies between rich dishes and champagne toasts.
Get in your zzzs
Not sure about you but after being at work all day, it sometimes feels like bedtime becomes my new thinking hour. The constant buzzing of the brain is not helpful when trying to get to sleep. Make some adjustments to your night routine to ensure you get an adequate amount of sleep (click here for some ideas) so you can be well rested and ready to accomplish all that you need to do.
Keep your finances in check
Switching jobs can be tough on your wallet. Maybe you got too excited about your first day and went overboard with a shopping spree or HR hasn’t quite sorted out the paperwork for your paychecks to have a seamless transition. Whatever the situation, make sure to keep a closer eye on your budget during your first few paychecks. This will save you from stressing with your bills and overall life.
And finally, be kind to yourself
Remember that this change is called a transition for a reason. It’s okay if you can’t accomplish as much as you had hoped if you are doing your best. Don’t stress too much about not knowing enough or what your first day will be like. Remember you were chosen because your new boss thought you were the best person for the job. Anything you don’t know, you will learn with time. Take things day-by-day and give yourself some well-deserved self-care – you’ve earned it!
