How I Get Sh*t Done: Leah & Rayah

YouTubers Leah & Rayah Gugliotta are the ultimate sister-duo! In 2013, they dived into the wonderful world of YouTube out of pure curiosity. Their videos are energetic and fun- just like Leah and Rayah! They’ve taken us around Toronto, attempted yoga challenges, Leah even took us along for the ride while she got ready for prom! Healthy is Hot sat down with Leah and Rayah to talk about their upcoming projects and why they love YouTube so much!

YouTube is such an awesome place for creating, why do you think this generation has flocked to this social medium?

Rayah:
YouTube is amazing because it gives everyone a voice and a chance to be heard. You can go on YouTube and make a video about literally anything you want, and there will be an audience for it.

Leah: I’ve learned so much from just searching up ‘How To’ videos on anything from vegan recipes to Adobe tips and tricks. Aside from just entertainment, there is so much knowledge you can learn from all sorts of videos; people call it the “School of YouTube”, and they’re not wrong.

What made you both want to start a channel on YouTube?

Leah:
Rayah and I started our YouTube channel in May of 2013 out of pure curiosity. We both loved watching YouTube videos and at the time we started, there were a lot of new, fun challenges going around. We decided we wanted to try them out and so our first video was the “Sister Does My Makeup Blindfolded” challenge. We didn’t expect anyone to watch it, so we shared it on Facebook with our friends and family and after that, we continued to film more challenges because we started getting such positive feedback.

It’s your average day- what’s your morning routine look like? (ie wake up routine, breakfast routine, do you work out first thing? do you have a job to get ready for, that kind of stuff)

Rayah
: My cats won't let me do anything in the morning until I've fed them, so that comes first. I currently work a part-time job, so my average mornings are usually pretty rushed (your girl loves sleeping in). A quick 20-minute makeup/hair routine, followed by an outfit change and a quick breakfast is typically what happens. However, on my days off, I love taking my time and starting out with a massive breakfast. Eggs, toast, hash browns, a coffee... the works!

Leah: I definitely love starting my day off early, but I do sleep in every now and then (I like to think it’s good for the soul). I put on music right when I wake up - my rock n’ roll playlist always puts me in a good mood, consisting of all my favourite rock bands such as The Who and Grateful Dead. Currently, I am doing freelance video editing and content creation, so although I am working from home I make sure I’m not just sitting at my computer all day. I like to go outside, get some sun and spend some time reading fiction novels.

What’s your favourite way to get your sweat on?

Leah:
I absolutely love going on bike rides. I am fortunate enough to live where I do, as I have close access to country roads which are perfect for biking during the warmer months. I also really enjoy going to the gym – I’m extremely grateful that I am physically able to exercise, and I try not to take that for granted. I used to do a bit of boxing and one day I hurt my wrist when I wasn’t wearing my gloves. This halted almost all of my arm exercises, but I have since been able to slowly work on building strength back into my wrist and now arm day has become one of my favourite workouts!

Rayah: I love weight lifting, HIIT, and swimming. I grew up as a competitive swimmer (swimming 8 times a week + weight training sessions) so I am very familiar and comfortable in the pool as well as the gym. I try to workout at least 3-4 times a week as it's just part of my lifestyle at this point. You will never catch me in a Zumba class though, I'm the least coordinated person I know!

How do you stay scheduled on your busiest of days?

Rayah:
Checklists! I am constantly writing things down, otherwise, I tend to forget everything I need to do. Plus crossing things off a list is super satisfying.

Leah: I have a large calendar right beside my desk where I can easily see and fill in my plans for the month - it is undoubtedly my number one necessity when it comes to organization and scheduling.

How do you unwind?

Rayah:
I always feel better and refreshed after a good sweat! I also love listening to music and painting. I could get lost working on a piece for hours and not even realize how much time has gone by, it's definitely my happy place.

What’s your bedtime routine like?

Leah:
Night time is typically when I watch movies – the darkness and silence is the perfect setting for a film (so introverted). At this time I also like to get a snack and a big mason jar of water, open my window to let in a fresh breeze, and just enjoy a good movie.

You both are super creative when it comes to your YouTube channel video ideas- where does that creativity come from?

Rayah:
We tend to bounce ideas off of each other which is nice because we constantly have each other to collaborate with. When one of us hits a creative wall, the other person will sort of spark up some ideas and then we take it from there! The key to creativity is to never stop brainstorming ideas. Even a bad idea is a stepping stone towards a great idea.

Leah: Personally, I find myself always craving a creative mindset; I am able to stay creatively motivated in my everyday life through constantly feeding that craving. I decorate my living space with my poetry, photos, colourful pillows, thrifted and antique items, and just anything that inspires me. I am often shooting photos and videos (for work and my personal life) and so I make sure my cameras are always within reach for when I’m feeling inspired.

Do you have a favourite mantra you say out loud every day?

Rayah: Yes! I have one by Picasso which is always pinned up on my bulletin board. It says "inspiration exists, but it has to find you working." This has stuck with me for years as it's a great reminder to keep creating even when I'm in a creative slump.

What’s one thing you want people to know about your YouTube channel?

Leah:
Rayah and I adore making videos for YouTube because it’s such a fantastic creative outlet. We create lifestyle videos such as vlogs, health and beauty, fashion hauls and more. We recently started filming individual videos (aside from just paired videos) because we do have different interests and really want to share them with our audience. I love filming with her – she is so creative and talented, and together we make a great team!

What’s one thing you want people to know about your sister?

Rayah: Leah is an extremely talented video editor so I find myself learning tips from her all the time. I have a very creative eye, so I feel like together we make a great team! I also think we pride ourselves on always being genuine and real with our audience.

Leah, since you’re the younger sister, what’s the best piece of advice your sister has given you?

Leah: She’s going to laugh at this, but she knows it’s true... “Don’t ever over pluck your eyebrows”.

What does ‘Healthy is Hot’ mean to you?

Rayah:
I think about being active, eating right, and living your best life! Taking care of your physical and mental health is super important and promoting a healthy lifestyle is something I can definitely get behind.

Leah: ‘Healthy is Hot’ to me, expresses that beauty is not all about one’s physical appearance. Being healthy is about respecting and treating your body, mind, and spirit with care. Loving and taking care of yourself; that’s attractive.
