How I Get Sh*t Done: Kayla Davis
Stronger, healthier, happier. These are the three words Kayla Davis lives by. After finding her passion for fitness studying for her kinesiology degree at Dalhouise University, Kayla realized first-hand how fitness could positively impact the lives of others. Kayla, who has been a personal trainer for over six years, strives to empower women every day with her app/workout plan, the KDAVIS fitness app! She loves using social media as a way to challenge her fitness community and is set out to prove that working out is achievable for everyone, everywhere. HIH sat down with Kayla to chat everything from how she motivates even the toughest clients to why unwinding isn’t always easy for her to do!
Tell us why you wanted to create the KDAVIS Fitness app?
K: I wanted to create a platform that was user-friendly and a one stop shop for my clients. A place where they could be supported, to be inspired and challenged every day. The KDAVIS app has a variety of features including; workouts created by me for all fitness levels, nutrition tracking, workout challenges, community support and so much more!
What’s your main goal when it comes to the app?
K: My mission with the app is to inspire women around the world to become stronger, healthier and happier. In order to do this, they need to feel supported, be held accountable and see progress - The app has all the features to do so. For example. You get a reminder at the beginning of every day to complete your scheduled workout, it encourages you to track your nutrition, and tracks your progress in a variety of measures. It's almost like having me in your pocket!
It’s your average day- what does your morning routine look like?
K: I love the mornings! There is no better feeling then getting up before sun rise. It’s my most creative, focused and productive time of day. I have been like this since I can remember, I love waking up before everyone else and feeling ahead of the game (the early bird catches the worm.. right?).
My ideal morning looks like:
5:15 AM - Wake up
5:30 am - Small pre-workout snack (ie. Banana or apple) and pre-workout supplement (Cellucor C4)
6:00 am - Workout
7:00 am - Breakfast (My go-to is Protein Chia Pudding) and Coffee!!!
Then the work begins.
What is your favourite go-to snack?
K: Protein bar!! I have a few favourites but currently, I am obsessed with the Made with Local bars - Coconut in the Dark is to die for! I always recommend my clients have some protein in their snacks throughout the day. That could mean a handful of nuts, a protein bar or boiled eggs.
What’s your favourite way to get your sweat on?
K: I have a few different ways (shocking) haha. Unless I am training for a specific goal, I like to mix things up with my training.
I love group training (Bootcamps and Crossfit). I find it super motivating to work out with a group of like-minded people, going after the same goal and pushing one another.
I love weight training with my girls and my husband. It’s a fun way to spend time together!
Now that it’s summer, I loooovve working out outside! Getting a tan while working out #winning!
How do you pump up even the toughest clients?
K: When my clients are struggling I try to get to the root cause, they could simply be having a bad day or maybe it goes way deeper than that. I take time to understand why they are feeling the way that they are and put together a plan and make adjustments where needed. Sometimes this means taking a step back, sometimes it means propelling them forward! I am all about creating a positive lifestyle change for my clients so when things aren’t positive we need to fix it!
To pump them up I remind them of all their small wins and successes! This could mean hitting a new personal best for one client, drinking more water for another or losing a couple inches. Regardless of the size, a win is a win!
How do you like to keep scheduled?
K: I can’t live without my notebook agenda. At the end of every day, I write down my to-do list to prep for the following day. That way when I wake up, I know exactly what needs to get done. I will check off my tasks throughout the day once I have completed them. It is super motivating for me to see my progress. For scheduling clients and appointments, I rely heavily on my phone calendar. If it’s not on my phone, I will likely forget about it.
How do you like to unwind?
K: I hate to say it but this is one of my weak points. When running an online business, the work never stops, you are on call 24/7. I have realized over the past few months that I need to work on this so I have been trying my best to leave my weekends to unwind and reset (or at least one day of the week). Most evenings, my husband and I will attempt to squeeze in something on Netflix before falling asleep. I actually find this helps shut off my mind before going to bed.
What’s your bedtime routine look like?
K: After dinner, I usually have a bit more work to do on the computer before writing down my to-do list for the following day. Next, I’ll shower, wash/moisturize my face with my new favourite skincare line by FRÉ, brush my teeth, tuck my dog into bed (yes, he sleeps with a blanket lol) and hop into bed.
Tell us something your fitness audience doesn’t know about you?
I travelled for almost a year and a half after I finished University. I spent 11 months in Australia, then a few months in Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Europe. My time spent in Australia was a year for finding myself. I took a leap of faith and moved there alone, I decided to get a job at a hostel so I could meet people. I ended up moving to the Outback of Australia for 3 months to a place called Birdsville (I dare you to look it up), the only way to get in and out of Birdsville was by a mail plane (literally 20 stops along the way) or by driving a very hazardous trail through the desert. It was a life-changing experience, to say the least and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
Do you have a favourite quote or mantra?
K: I have a couple classics that I live by.
“Everything happens for a reason” - Sometimes things just don't go as planned. Instead of getting discouraged and letting it bring me down, I remind myself that whatever happened, happened for a reason! It takes time for that reason to come to light but it ALWAYS does. This quote has kept my mind positive and literally got me through some of the toughest times.
“You can do anything you set your mind to” - If you are willing to step outside your comfort zone, take action and persevere, you can accomplish even your wildest dreams. Even if you fail, you will learn a valuable lesson and grow from it so you have nothing to lose! Set your mind to something and go after it!

K: To me, Healthy is Hot means living a healthy lifestyle with a positive mindset, and shining with confidence.
