7 Must Have Work Wardrobe Staples

Hi HIH family Tishana here!

As a new graduate, the work world can be intimidating. Especially when you start your new job, a lot of factors come into play. You’re adjusting to a lot of things. The last thing you want to worry about is what you can and can not wear. Now, the professional world has changed a lot and many things you were able to wear to the office years ago are now acceptable. Today I’m here to share with you some go to pieces for the office!

1.    Work Bag!

The bag you choose to take to work is such an important piece to your wardrobe. Especially if you’re commuting, what you carry in your bag are essentials to you on an everyday basis. One of my biggest struggles was finding a bag that would hold my laptop, a notebook, some makeup for on the go touch ups, my water bottle, my sunnies and the little things like tissues, hand sanitizer, Advil, tampons, pens or a lip balm. I needed a bag that was neutral but still functional. Granted, some days I do choose to use my backpack when having more than the normal amount of things to carry but on most days I choose to use a handbag. My tote bag has the right amount of structure, is easy to clean and most importantly carries everything I need.

2.    The Right Work Pants

The right work pants can sometimes feel like finding a diamond in the rough. For me, my go-to style is the cigarette pant. It’s an easy go to that flatters any body type. Not only are they comfortable to wear but also easy to style. You can wear them with a flattering blouse or you could always call it a day by tucking in a basic tee.

3.    The Shoes

Now shoes, in general, can be a tough decision but work shoes can be even worse. To find a pair of shoes that work generally with every outfit can sometimes be daunting to think about. For me, as cute as wedges or a small heel may look, they just aren’t functional. So as a commuter, I choose to wear a comfortable pair of runners on my way in and out of the office but I bring my cute smaller heels to change it. However, some days you do have some running around to do whether that be in or out of the building. For those days I choose to turn to a flat or loafer type of shoe. These shoes are not only comfortable but also stylish because they bring a certain type of casual and comfort to an outfit. Depending on the work environment you’re in you can even pull off a comfy white pair of converse with your outfit!

4.    The Jewelry

For me, I’m personally not a big fan of jewelry so I prefer the minimalist style however, there are a few pieces I have that can jazz up any simple outfit. One of my favourite pieces is an oversized watch, with a watch, it adds a little bit of bling to an outfit but is still a functional piece of jewelry. Along with this, I tend to choose a few rings that I wear all the time and a simple necklace. These few pieces make me feel like I’m accessorized but style functional at the same time.

5.    Lanyard

Now, this isn’t really essential that most people think of, however it is a lifesaver. Nowadays most companies require some sort of identification or badge to entire their buildings. If you need to carry a card with you, a lanyard is so useful to always have on you. Not only is it easy to find in your bag but it’s also easy to keep on your body throughout the workday. With your ID you can attach any other keys you so everything is together! There are many other forms of a lanyard such as a cardholder with a keychain or clips that can attach cards right to your pants.

6.    The One Piece You Didn’t Know You Needed

I know that most jumpsuits have a reputation, yes they’re a little award to take to the washroom but oddly enough they suit the purpose. They are so great for an all in one piece that makes the perfect outfit. They are a no-brainer and always is a great choice to give a polished look without much effort at all. It’s not a piece that a lot of people think of but they’re great in a pinch!

7.    The Perfect Jeans

We’re all looking for the perfect pair of jeans. A lot of companies now aren’t as formal as they used to be and jeans are more frequent in the workplace culture. So the perfect pair of jeans is a must for your casual Fridays. I know it can be frustrating but don’t give up! For my curvy ladies, out there I highly recommend Old Navy as a great place to find the perfect jean that works with your body with restrictions. For more of the classic look, Levi’s is a great place to start. No matter what you’re body type is, there is a pair of jeans out there for you and remember they are a staple in your wardrobe whether that’s in or out of the office so splurging is always accepted in this department.

Whether you’re looking to refresh your summer work wardrobe or need some help as to where you should be looking, I hope this helped to point you in the right direction. These are all essentials I felt we need and some you don’t really think about when you get into the work place.

All the best with your work wardrobe this season!
