Wellness in the City: 3 Simple and Easy Wellness Tips
Life in the city can be fast paced and busy, here are some simple tips to help ensure you are taking care of yourself.
1. Eat Well – Prepare Snacks
It can be a challenge to try to eat well with a busy lifestyle. We’ve all been there with a full schedule and never seem to have the time to prepare to eat well. Here are some easy tips to help you eat healthy:
Have nutritional snacks nearby
Who doesn’t get a hunger crash at 3pm? Consider prepping your workspace/workbag with healthy snacks, that way you can grab for a healthy snack, rather than running to the vending machine or coffee shop.
Prepare trail mix and leave it at your desk. Trail mix has so many health benefits: pumpkin seeds contain omega-3, omega 6 fatty acids, fiber and antioxidants; while almonds contain healthy fats, protein, vitamin E and magnesium. Consider placing frozen fruit in a small container, by 3pm that fruit would be defrost and ready to be chow down on and help to conquer your hunger!
Life in the city can be b-u-s-y and it can be hard to find time to reflect. One way to help is to try to incorporate wellness into your daily routines. This could be done by getting off the TTC one stop earlier, and walking the remaining way home through a park, or quite residential area. During this time take time to reflect on your day or things you are looking forward to in the week.
If you are not able to get off the TTC a stop earlier, consider taking the first 10 – 15 minutes you arrive home to yourself to decompress. During this time put away your phone, turn off the ringer and don’t access any social media, Internet, TV. Just take a few minutes to yourself to unwind from your day.
Be conscious of your breathing. Slow deep breaths help the body to relax and decompress and helps the body to self-regulate. Not familiar with breathing techniques? Start small with setting aside a few moments to practice deep breathing. A simple exercise is to slowly breathe in for three counts … 1 – 2 – 3 and out breathe out for three counts … 1 – 2 – 3.
Most Importantly Be Fair To Yourself
No one is perfect. If you try to incorporate some wellness in your schedule and it doesn’t work out perfectly – that’s okay because as human beings we are all imperfect. Take time a moment to celebrate when things are going well and when it doesn’t work out celebrate the fact that you had put effort into it and reflect and see what could be slightly changed to help you do better next time. Good luck!
