How I Get Sh*t Done: Melissa Offner

Looking for inspiration? Melissa Offner is your girl. She’s a content creator, stylist and world explorer. After years of being a television host, she felt stuck. She made the decision to leave that life behind and embrace the freelance life! She now runs, a blog that takes a unique take on wellness, fashion, travel and more! Healthy is Hot sat down with Melissa to talk about her blogging journey, why she would surf everyday if she could, and what projects she has on the go!

What is and why did you start it? 

MELSAYS.COM started as a personal blog, where I wanted to share my passions for everything except music. Since I was working as a music television host at the time, I wanted a platform where I could talk about other things than music so started a Wordpress site. I never knew that this blog would become what it is today. On it I share my passion for movement and the outdoors, travel, healthy living and community. I’m also very proud of a section called “5 Questions With”, where I interview women aged 18-35 who come from different walks of life who share their life stories. Last fall, I transformed that series into a podcast, hopefully giving these women a bigger voice and place to share their stories.

It’s your average day- what does your morning routine look like? 

I wake up everyday thinking of my goals for the day. Though every day is quite different, the one thing that doesn’t change if I’m home is that I take the time to make myself my favourite homemade breakfast bowl, which includes chia seeds, rolled oats, fresh fruits, almond milk, nuts, dried fruits, cinnamon, and peanut butter. I also drink a green juice and I find that both of these things help kick-start my day the right way.  

 If I’m not shooting, I’ll usually work from home and then either have to go teach or for a meeting. I used to love being on location but as I’ve gotten older, I definitely do enjoy banging out full days of work at home, that’s really where and when I’m the most productive.  


What began your passion for fitness?  

I grew up playing pretty much every sport imaginable. I was a very anxious and also hyper kid so my mom figured that playing sports would probably be a good outlet for all the extra energy that I had. And she was right! I played a variety of individual and group sports, which really taught me a whole lot about myself, how to channel my anxiety and stress, etc. I kept up with it for most of my life until I moved to Toronto when I started my professional career. For the first few years, I lived in Toronto, fitness and a healthy lifestyle fell by the wayside. However, when I started really battling some crazy anxiety at my tv job, I bought a pair of running shoes and started going for runs, something I had never done before in my life. That was a catalyst for all of the things I’m doing today…  


What is your favourite way to get your sweat on? 

Going for a surf session or going for a trail run, these are my two favourite activities hands down. Nothing compares the feeling of riding a wave or running up a mountain. They are also the two activities that allow me to be in the present moment, 100% focused and not worried about anything else. It’s when I feel the most alive.

Can you talk about any upcoming projects for any of these companies?  

There are tons of travel projects coming up for which I’ll be doing content for. I’ve also got a few amazing partnerships with companies and brands that I really love that I’m working on. Otherwise, my husband, who runs The Offners Productions Inc., is finishing up working on the first television show that he’s produced. I was thrilled to be a part of this project as well. It will be airing in the spring across Canada. I’ll also be recording more podcast episodes in the coming weeks, which I’m super excited about. Additionally, I’ve gotten a ton of races coming up with the run club that I lead called RUNDISTRIKT.  


You wear a lot of hats- how do you keep so scheduled?  

It’s not easy but wearing many hats that you love and having a real passion for what you do helps you get through the periods of time when things seem really overwhelming. I’ve always worked multiple jobs or have worn multiple hats since I was a teenager. It keeps me on my toes at all times and keeps things fresh. I also rely on my iPhone, notes and Google Calendar to keep me organized.  


How do you like to unwind?  

To unwind I usually throw myself into a sport that I like or try to watch a series or movie. But my way to unwind almost 90% of the time includes some sort of physical activity and usually in a nature setting. I love going for trail runs, a hike, a swim and if I could, I would totally go surf every day.  

What is it about being outdoors that makes you happy?  

The outdoors procure me with a sense of calmness and wellbeing. I love getting people to move and explore the outdoors around them, it’s really what drives me and everything that I do. When I’m in nature, all my anxiety and stresses disappear. The ocean is my first love but moving to the west coast, I’ve grown to absolutely love the forest and the mountains.  


What does your bedtime routine look like? 

My bedtime routine is pretty simple. I usually make certain my phone is on airplane mode, I try to do a 10 minute meditation practice with Headspace and finish off my evening by telling myself the 3 things I’m grateful for that happened in my day.  


What does Healthy is Hot mean to you? 

Healthy is Hot is such a beautiful movement that totally corresponds to my view on life. It promotes health as being sexy and attractive unlike most mainstream media, ads and society as a whole. I love that this movement promotes balance and also inspires individuals to find ways to become the best version of themselves. I also like that HIH does not shy away from talking about real issues and struggles that everyone can face on their health and wellness journey. So proud of Chloe and the entire team!
