HIGSD: Drea Wheeler Feature!
In need of some motivation to kick start your New Year’s resolutions? Drea Wheeler is all the inspo you’ll ever need. Drea is a Montreal-based private fitness trainer and lifestyle coach. She’s also the force behind Bodylicious, a heart-pumping cardo-dance sweat session she teaches at Victoria Park, a multistudio fitness boutique (which she is also a partner in!). Drea is also a Bumble Community Manager, an ambassador for Gwyneth Paltrow’s company Goop, and just recently added Red Bull ambassador to her resume! I had the chance to sit down with Drea to discuss everything from her love of almond milk lattes (YAAAAAS!) to the attainable tips she gives to those who need the motivation to get their butts to the gym!
Q: It’s your average day- tell us about your morning routine!
A: Firstly, no day is ever average! I am constantly grinding, and every day is different -- filled with new opportunities and goals to achieve. However, my morning routine is extremely important to me because it sets my day. I don’t like to rush in the morning and I try my very hardest not to use my phone.
I wake up at 7:30AM, have an almond milk latte and listen to my favorite tunes. I feed my dog, meditate then I take him for a walk. Getting fresh air in the morning is amazing and it really wakes me up. I prepare a smoothie to have on the go, kiss my husband good bye and get to Victoria Park to teach my first class of the day.
Q: Okay so I’ve wanted to try a Bodylicious class since following and interviewing @thefitftale, Samantha Cutler! It looks so fun and empowering. What made you want to create these classes?
A: You need to try one of my Bodylicious classes! It’s a full body workout, filled with squats, drops and jumps. Together, we dance to the beat of the most amazing music while building confidence and strength.
I was inspired to start Bodylicious because one thing that brings people together is music and whether you think you can dance or not, everyone can move! Most memories I have growing up include dancing and music. It’s a challenging class and when you walk out of the room you feel energized, confident and fierce.
Q: You’re a fitness expert and a celebrity trainer, but you’re also a Goop ambassador as well (so cool!). Gwyneth Paltrow is just on her own level when it comes to wellness and I admire her for it- what’s your favorite thing about being an ambassador for that brand?
A: A couple months ago I went to the Goop Summit in Vancouver; it was the best health, and wellness and beauty events I’ve ever attended. The best part was that I was asked to teach one of my Bodylicious classes there. Goop is amazing, I use their website to explore new healthy recipes, trendy workout attire and beauty tips. Being featured on their website was a huge honor!
Q: You’re also a Bumble Community Manager- tell us what your role looks like there?
A: My role as Bumble’s Community Manager is to bring people together, whether that be on a business, personal or casual way. Every month I host a Bumble event, varying from a networking, social, community, volunteering event. I particularly enjoy wearing this hat because I always get to meet new amazing people and I get to be a part of new relationships and friendships. Personally, I’ve grown as a person since I’ve started being Bumble’s Community Manager.
Q: Do you have a mantra or favourite quote you use to keep motivated in the gym?
A: “You don’t get the ass you want by sitting on it.”
Q: What’s your favourite way to get your sweat on?
A: Bodylicious, Bodylicous, Bodylicious!!! Cardio is my best friend and dancing to my favourite tunes brings out the happiest Drea. I get to squat and sweat at the same time, do you really need more of an explanation?
Q: What are some tips to help us get our butts out of bed and to the gym for an early morning workout or heading to a spin class after work when all you want to do is go home and relax?
A: Preparation and planning are key! Set yourself up for success by packing your gym bag the night before and leaving it by the door. Book your class in advance, that way you’re committed to going. Buddy up, you’re more likely to go if you have a friend waiting for you. When you’re feeling sluggish early in the morning or late in the day, a caffeine boost always helps me. Ill grab a coffee or a Red Bull (Sugar free is my go to). Caffeine can help improve endurance and intensity in your workouts. In the end, training with consistency and seeing the results will be motivation enough to keep you going.
Q: I’ve noticed that you’re all about simple solutions = BIG change- what advice can you give to our readers on how to have a successful 2019 when it comes to health, fitness, wellness and being happy?
A: Make realistic goals and know that change takes time. Make simple changes: take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for a walk instead of binge watching a show, cook dinner instead of going out. Get yourself a gym partner, someone who will motivate you, come try a Bodylicious class! Don’t go crazy and make unrealistic impulsive changes because then you will have a burnout and end up disappointed. Make sure you’re doing it because you want to, you’re beautiful no matter what; always put your happiness first.
Q: What’s does your bedtime routine look like?
A: Firstly, I do not bring my phone to the bedroom, this is an extremely strict rule! I always dry brush, this helps with improving vascular blood circulation and winter dry skin. I dry brush head to toe! On my arms and legs I do it in strokes and on my stomach, neck and more sensitive areas I do it in circular motions because it’s more gentle! I have a different dry brush for my face, it’s a smaller brush and the bristles are softer. I like to have a cup of tea (or wine depending on the day), change into my comfiest pajamas and hang out with my husband and dog (Boston terrier) Rambo.
Q: How do you like to unwind after a long week?
A: SELF CARE. Massages and spa days are the perfect way for me to unwind and rebalance. I am either teaching a class or sitting at a desk answering emails and phone calls. Sometimes, life can get stressful and my body feels it. I don’t like the feeling of being overwhelmed, that’s why I schedule TLC days and a massage is the best way to do it.
Q: Do you have a favourite quote you use to keep you motivated in life?
A: “I love it when the caffeine kicks in and I realize what an adorable badass I’m going to be today!”
Q: What is something you want people to know about you that they might not know yet?
A: I’m born in Texas and I have a degree in sociology!
Q: What does Healthy is Hot mean to you?
A: Being healthy is so hot- that is exactly what it means to me. I could feel someone’s energy and when they’re healthy, happy vibes are radiating off them into me, I love it! I try to surround myself with people like this and aspire to be a healthy, hot girl boss.
