The Benefits of Working with a Nutrition Coach


Today on the blog, I’m going to get a little vulnerable. I feel it is important to open up and share my story for anyone out there who is struggling with self care. As a health professional I should know that self care is of the utmost importance. I tell my patients that every day! But I guess it’s my nature to take care of others before taking care of myself. And sadly, I got to the point where I really wasn’t caring for myself.

My life has changed dramatically over the last two and a half years. I have been so lucky to have had two pregnancies, delivering two healthy baby girls. After having my babies, my body has changed. Well, duh right? I was expecting that it would of course! What I was not expecting was just how much I would have to change my fitness and nutrition regimen to get back into shape. I thought that I would start working out again, eat less junk (pregnancy cravings are no joke); and voila! I’d get my body back. Right? Wrong. Turns out, that wasn’t going to do the trick. I realized I lost my way when it came to my nutrition. Life became so busy, and I started to form bad habits. I would reach for the quick, easy, familiar recipes. My tried and true comfort meals got old real quick. I decided it was time to make a change. But mentally, this time it was very difficult. I was tired with less time and energy to think about these things! What was happening to me? My health was no longer my focus. Life had (naturally) become all about my girls. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t change that for the world! I found myself trying to balance this new world of motherhood with my career. But I started to worry that I lost myself entirely. What kind of example was I setting for my daughters and my patients?


And so, as we all know sometimes in life you need a boost. I started to compare my nutrition game to exercise. I have always had a gym buddy to motivate me (thanks to my older sister), or a soccer team to train with. Even though I know how to workout I have always performed better when working with a support system. I have been educated in the nutrition field. But I was failing at putting that theory into action (for myself, not for others let’s be clear on that one lol). To all the moms out there in the HIH universe, I know you feel me on this one…our needs become an afterthought and it has got to stop! I thought I must make some big changes. After all, if I didn’t take care of me, how could I be healthy and well enough to take care of my girls? I needed some guidance.  


I decided to reach out to an old friend and teammate of mine who just happens to be a nutrition coach, Michelle McGrattan. This girl is the real deal. She is a mom, a Barre instructor, a published health and fitness writer, previous fitness competitor, dancer, varsity soccer player…I mean the girl can do it all! Michelle is passionate about helping people reach their health and fitness goals because she truly cares for others. She has helped me to get back to taking care of myself through proper nutrition. And let me tell you, I feel incredible!

I know it seems so basic and you might be thinking that all you have to do is “eat healthy”. But if it were that simple then why do so many of us struggle with it? We are constantly bombarded with images and advertisements for junk food, fast food, etc. Why aren’t there as many ads for veggies? Shout out to broccoli and kale! Why are we so brainwashed and addicted to these unhealthy foods? We should eat what nature provides! I’m getting off track and going on a rant, but you get the picture. If you are having a tough time with your diet like I was, then you will surely benefit from working with a credible coach. They will help you critically examine your current diet and make personalized suggestions for ways to improve. A coach will keep you accountable with regular check-ins. They quickly become your support system to discuss how you are feeling, and what you might be struggling with. They’ve heard it all, and most likely have been through it themselves! They can also provide tools like food diaries, meal plans, recipes, advice on vitamins and supplements. If you lie, they will know it! A coach should also educate you on the science behind the food, how to balance your meals and explanations on why you need to eat certain foods. Even things like timing of meals! So, be honest, are you paying this close attention to your nutrition on your own? If you are then kudos to you my friend! But if you are not, that’s okay too. I just want you to know that if do you want help in this area, it is out there!


Healthy eating doesn’t have to be a negative thing. And if it is seen that way then you will most likely fail. Healthy eating can be fun, and adventurous. It will break you out of a stale funky diet and awaken your taste buds to make you realize just how good natural foods are! If you are struggling with your diet and looking for some help, then I urge you to find a nutrition coach who is passionate about this subject.

It’s the start of a new year—2019! This could be your year! It’s time to make yourself a priority. Let’s vow to get our health in check by being honest with ourselves.  I’m speaking from my personal experience here. I admitted I needed some help, reached out and asked for it and made the change. I’m a work in progress and I will continue to work on it every day. I’m on that healthy eating train and I want you to join!
