My Skincare Routine

serums1.JPG

Hey HIH fam! I wanted to talk to you today about skincare. Most of my life, I’ve struggled with acne. I can remember going into high school, super insecure about my skin. The acne, the scarring, the redness. Thinking about it now makes me want to hug that 14-year-old girl. Fast forward to now at 23 years old, I never thought I’d still be dealing with acne.

I really didn’t think I would still have such bad acne as an adult, but according to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne can occur at any stage of life, and may continue into one’s 30’s and 40’s... not great news for someone who has been dealing with it for almost 10 years already.

I have oily, acne-prone skin. By the end of a work day, (and I don’t use blotting papers), my face is just so shiny and it makes me so self-conscious. This year, I’m really trying to take care of my whole body, and that includes stepping up my skin care routine.

I wanted to share my skincare routine with you today, in hopes that it helps anyone who may be struggling with acne.

Step 1: Cleansing

I recently bought a brand new product for cleansing and exfoliating my skin, and I’ve been seeing pretty good results so far. The product I’m talking about is the Vanity Planet Ultimate Skin Spa. It’s a dual-speed, rotary spin brush designed to address the needs of multiple skin types in one system. It’s gentle enough that it can be used on sensitive skin, but it thoroughly removes hard-to-get dirt, makeup and debris. It includes 3 interchangeable brush heads; daily cleansing, exfoliating (use one a week) and a silicone head for sensitive skin. I put a pea-sized amount of my favourite cleanser and spin it on my face for about 30 seconds. There’s two speeds, medium and high, but I’ve been using the medium because I find it’s less harsh on my face.

The cleanser I’ve been using for the past 2 months has really been a game changer for me. It’s the Origins Checks and Balances frothy face wash. For Christmas, my mom bought me all the little travel sizes of the best of the Origins products from Sephora, so I’m just about to run out of this mini cleanser, but I will for sure be buying a full-size one. It comes out like a cream, but it turns into a frothy foam-like substance when wet, giving you a gentle (and super fun) cleansing experience. It has this essential oil blend of spearmint, field mint, bergamot, lavender and geranium that uplifts your mood as you take a whiff, and leaves just a comfortably clean feeling.

Step 2: Toner

So because I got the spin brush, toner has almost become like unnecessary in my skin routine. After I cleanse my skin, I swipe my face with a cotton pad and some toner and it’s usually pretty clean when I look at it when I’m finished. But I still do use toner on a regular basis in my routine, so I thought I’d share the two I’ve been using in the past year.

The first one is the Clinique Clarifying Lotion. This toner is specifically designed for combination oily skin, so that’s pretty much why I bought it. I did their three-step process for all of 2018, and though I didn’t hate it, it just wasn’t what I needed to clear up my acne but I kept the toner because it was the only product of the 3 that lasted after 12 months of use (and that was me using the 3-step process every day, twice a week so a huge bang for your buck, so kudos to Clinique!). I really like how gentle it is, and that it doesn’t have a scent to it. It also doesn’t dry out your skin, and clears away dull flakes to uncover your beautiful fresh skin.

The second one is from my Origin’s mini set, and that one is the Dr. Andrew Wiel for Origins Mega-Mushroom Relief & Resilience soothing treatment lotion. This is a light, soothing watery lotion for sensitive skin types. It’s supposed to help with redness and dryness. It’s made with reishi mushrooms, fermented chug and coprinus mushrooms, which are superfoods. It has no sulphates, or parabens so it’s made with super clean ingredients. Plus the smell is just amazing, it kinda reminds me of tea Tree oil. i really like using this for reducing redness in my pimples, and I love the clean feeling it gives me after I use it.

Step 3: Serums

For the past 3-6 months I’ve been incorporating face serums into my skincare routine and have noticed a major difference in the overall appearance of my skin. before using them, I really thought they would make my acne worse because I was putting oil back into my skin, but it actually does the opposite. they bring moisture back into the skin after a long day or a restful sleep. Here’s the three kinds I’ve been using;

1.     Vitamin C- promotes collagen production, protects skin from sun damage, and reduces skin discolouration

2.     Niacinamide + Zinc- helps clear congested complexions, minimizes appearance appearance and severity of blemishes.

3.     Aloe + Hyaluronic acid: helps keep you moisturized, reduces the appearance of fine lines & winkles, and doesn’t clog pores.

Step 4: Eye cream

This is a new product I’ve added to my routine in 2019. I have been using the Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream to Brighten and Depuff. This eye cream brightens your eye by demising the appearance of dark circles and puffiness, which is perfect because I definitely suffer from dark circles when I don’t sleep properly or spend too much time on the computer. Really really love this product!

Step 5: Spot Treatments

The two spot treatments I use for my acne are the Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Spot Gel and Origins Super Spot Remover Blemish Treatment Gel. I really like both of these products and I think they are both pretty effective. I usually use the Origins one when I’m washing my face, and the Neutrogena one as an overnight spot treatment.

Step 6: Moisturizer

And finally I put my moisturizer on, which is, you guessed it, another Origins product! This one is the Origins Ginzing Energy Boosting Moisturizer. I really like how light weight this cream is and the smell is so beautiful. Like you just cut open an orange or something!
