Book review: Unfu*k Yourself
Whenever I get asked what types of books I read, I usually start off with "self-help" books. The reaction I get is, "aren't all of those books the same with the exact same advice that's not realistic for everyday life?". No, not really. Not all of the self-help books I read are unrealistic.
Especially Unfu*k Yourself by Gary John Bishop.
When it comes to life, I personally believe in taking a real hard look at the situation(s) you're in and being realistic with yourself. This book is all about taking a realistic approach to your life, no matter what situation you're in.
Everyone in life has problems. You could have all the money in the world but it will never make you happy if you're not happy with yourself. You really need to work hard on yourself as an individual and being realistic with yourself is the first step.
Instead of only dwelling on what is wrong and thinking life sucks and that it's over, you really need to adopt the attitude of, "I got this". It's difficult to stay level-headed when you're facing life challenges and that's completely understandable. What we need to do at times where we get emotional is take a step back, take a deep breath and try our best to look at our life and what good is there. No, this won't change our crappy situations but it puts it into perspective that not everything will stay horrible forever.
Your next step is to create a game plan. What situations are you currently facing? What can you control about it? Focus on that and do your absolute best. There is no sense in dwelling on what we can't change or fix because it'll only make us feel worse. Although focusing on what we can do won't always fix a terrible situation, it will definitely make you feel more powerful and secure with yourself despite whatever is happening.
To sum up the book without totally giving everything away, we have been dealing with adversity since the beginning of our lives. There are times where we believed we would never get better, get over a situation or get out of a mess but we did. We always overcome situations we never think we will get over.
And you want to know what the best part about getting through situations we never thought we'd get through? We always come through the other side stronger.
If you're looking for a self-help book that keeps it real with you about different aspects of life, this is it. It's so easy to stay inside of our own heads that we forget to think outside of the box and look at our situations with a clear mind and a new perspective.
Throughout everything, stay strong, healthy is hot ladies and gentlemen!
