Wellness Tips for the Helping Professionals

Working as a helping professional can be fast paced and extremely busy. Some days you may wonder, where has the time has gone? To help take care of yourself, here are a few simple tips to help ensure you are taking care of yourself while taking care of others when working in the helping field.

1. Eat Well – Prepare Nutritional Snacks

It can be a challenge to try to eat well. We have all been there with a full schedule and never seem to find the time to prepare healthy snacks.  Here are some easy tips to help you eat healthy.

Consider prepping your workspace/workbag with healthy snacks, that way you can grab for a healthy snack, rather than running to the vending machine or coffee shop. Trail mix is a great snack you can prepare ahead of time and leave at your desk.

Trail mix has so many health benefits: pumpkin seeds contain omega-3, omega 6 fatty acids, fiber and antioxidants, while almonds contain healthy fats, protein, vitamin E and magnesium.

2. Reflect

Consider taking the first 5 – 10 minutes when you arrive home to yourself to decompress. During this time put away your phone, turn off the ringer and don’t access any social media, Internet, TV. Just take a few minutes to yourself to unwind from your day.

3. Breathe

Slow deep breaths can help the body to relax, decompress and helps the body to self-regulate. Consider taking a few moments at the start of your workday to practice deep breathing.

Start small with setting aside a few minutes to practice deep breathing. A simple breathing exercise is to slowly breathe in for three counts … 1 – 2 – 3 and slowly breathe out for three counts … 1 – 2 – 3.

4. Be Fair To Yourself

No one is perfect. If you try to incorporate some wellness techniques into your schedule and it does not work out perfectly – that’s okay. Take a moment to celebrate when things are going well and when it doesn’t work out, celebrate the fact that you had put effort into it.

Good luck!
