Books That Heal: You are a Badass by Jen Sincero

Self-Help and Well-Being; these are the sections of the bookstore I spend hours in looking for some type of answer to life’s burning questions. If you, like me, find inspiration in learning from other people’s life lessons, look no further than You are a Badass by Jen Sincero for your next read.

Jen’s words are not only an empowering source of advice, but her conversational tone will make you feel like you’re sitting with your best friend for a pep talk. Here are a few of my favourite chapters and the lessons I took away from them:

Chapter 1: My Subconscious Made Me Do It

Here, Jen breaks down the difference between your subconscious and conscious minds with the results that can arise from your internal beliefs. She takes you through an example from her own life & encourages you to write down how this might apply to you. You will feel more in tune with yourself after simply reading this first chapter.

Chapter 6: Love The One You Is

For any of our HIH readers struggling with low self-esteem, this chapter is for you. It’s so easy to hear or read the words “love yourself”; it’s a whole other topic to break down some practical tips to get you started in the way that chapter 6 does. My personal favourite pearl of wisdom comes from her advice to “let the love in” and accept compliments.

Chapter 8: What Are You Doing Here?

Self-discovery at its finest is revealed in this chapter. I read this book at a point in my life where I truly felt lost, and Jen’s words took me out of that fog by giving me some encouragement, “Do your best wherever you’re at, everything you do along your journey contributes to where you’re going.” Do you look at your life as being a conflict between your head and your heart? Do you see experiences as being a string of unrelated events? The bottom line is that you are not alone and there are actions you can take right now to redeem some sort of control.

My collection of self-help books is constantly growing, and I love sharing the messages that really hit home with me in the hopes of helping someone else. There are unlimited sources out there for anyone who is struggling, this book is just one example of the way that the right words paired with guided calls to action can make all the difference.  Still not convinced? I’ll leave you with my favourite quote and will let the words speak for themselves:

“If you want to live a life you’ve never lived, you have to do things you’ve never done.” – Jen Sincero
