Which Diet Type Is Right For You?

I usually get asked quite often about whether various diet types and eating patterns - like keto, paleo and intermittent fasting - ACTUALLY work to help you achieve your weight loss/fat loss goals.

The short answer? It depends.

Some (not all!) of these diet types can work, but they don’t necessarily work for everyone. To be honest, it all boils down to your lifestyle and whether this way of eating can be sustainable in the long-term. (Because we all know that the “quick fixes” never truly last.)

And while I know that many of them are backed by scientific research and can give you some sort of “structure” to follow, there’s truly SO MUCH INFORMATION OUT THERE that it’s difficult (& frankly, pretty overwhelming!) to have to trudge through all of the journals, articles and research papers in order to figure out which one actually works for you.

So, I’m going to be a bit controversial here and say - don’t bother with ANY of them.

The key to achieving your weight loss & health goals truly comes down to a few universal principles:

EAT MORE WHOLE FOODS:

You know all those one-ingredient foods - like kale, chicken, apples, and almonds? Yeah. Eat more of them and less of the processed stuff.

DRINK LOTS OF WATER:

And not just sodas and coffee - drink actual water! It’s said that we need around 12 cups of water a day (including the water in our food) in order stay hydrated & function optimally.

EAT IN A CALORIE DEFICIT:

This is honestly all you really need if you’re looking to lose weight. No matter whether you’re getting enough protein, carbs or fats - if you’re eating in a calorie deficit, you WILL lose weight. Start here first, and build upon this whenever you’ve got it down.

GET ENOUGH PROTEIN:

Make sure you are getting high quality sources of protein (whether you’re a vegetarian or a meat eater). Chicken, fish, nuts, beans, seeds, yogurt, cheese - all of these can and SHOULD be consumed as part of a healthy diet.

SUPPLEMENT WHEN NECESSARY:

Supplements can be a bit of a money grab if you’re misinformed and/or getting enough nutrients through the food you eat already. However, if you live in a region where you’re, let’s say, deficient in Vitamin D, then it’s a good idea to supplement with Vitamin D in order to have enough of the daily recommended amount. So, supplement when necessary!
