Meet Catherine McWade! After trying every fad diet in the book in university, Catherine wanted to try something completely different. So she tried a 30-day fitness challenge where she was introduced to group training with qualified coaches. Through this empowering community, Catherine decided she wanted to become one of those coaches too! Now a qualified, knowledge trainer, Catherine is always seeking to discover how human performance and daily life can be elevated through fitness and nutrition! This week, on HIGSD, we sat down with her to discuss everything from why she got into intuitive nutrition to her love for wine!

Q: It's your average day- take us through your morning routine!

A: Wake-ups are early and that's the way I like it! 5:45 am the alarm goes off and the next hour consists of: pour over coffee, 15 minutes of stretching and a quick journal to get my thoughts flowing for the day. I prefer to workout in the morning, but generally will book into a class wherever it works in the day. Class accountability for me = KEY to adherence in gym routines.

Q: What inspired you to get into intuitive nutrition?

A: Years of just not quite feeling "my best" and when I moved to Toronto I was introduced to a Nutritionist who really opened my eyes to the world of how food can influence your entire well-being - physical and mental health. I was victim to years of fad-diets in university and never really understood why they didn't work for me like they "should" or like they did for other people. What I was really doing was comparing myself physically to others, which NEVER makes you feel your best. After slowing figuring out what worked for me, I enrolled in school to become a Holistic Nutritionist and from there I've been continuously inspired to help others find EXACTLY what works for them, and no one else.

Q: What's your favourite way to get your sweat on?

A: Fuel Training Club's personal training classes. The community is filled with diverse, yet like minded people and the coaches are extremely knowledgeable - The classes are strictly capped at 12 and their is great attention to form first over anything to ensure people stay safe and injury free while improving their fitness!

Q: You work at Fuel Training Club, tell us the energy that studio brings you?

A: Working with Greg Hetherington at Fuel Training Club has been a huge learning experience for me. Greg has been in this industry for over a decade, and his success in building the Fuel Brand is to be admired here in Toronto. If you know Greg, he's down to earth, charismatic, a little nerdy but insanely knowledgeable. He also knows how to have fun, and bring lifestyle balance to his work. Being a part of the Fuel team feels like the culmination of all the best things I've learned from working at various CrossFit gyms and other fitness studios in the City. Fuel classes light me up and I leave every class feeling energized by the athletes who come in everyday and are so dedicated to their overall health. Greg, the other Fuel trainers, and every member inspires me to continue doing what I do, and continuing learning. Striving to always Be Better, and be the best version of myself I can be.

Q: What are some of your go-to studios/classes to go to?

A: Fuel! They have 3 studios - downtown, east end and west end! After that I sometimes hit up f45 for a good sweat, the occasional CrossFit class for some healthy competition, or I can be found in my garage gym (built by my husband) moving around heavy barbells and sleds.

Q: What's your bedtime routine look like?

A: Screens off around 9:30pm - I enable night shift on my iPhone at 7pm to make sure I start eliminating Blue Light exposure in the hours leading up to bed - Sleep is SO important. I take my pup Toby for one last evening walk, which I find very therapeutic. Then it's time to brush my teeth and wash my face. Teeth - I’m pretty uptight about dental hygiene so I use OralB electric toothbrush and ALWAYS floss. Face - I use an all-natural African Black Soap for cleansing and then I use a combo of The Ordinary's 100% borage oil mixed with their Buffet serum for anti-aging. The borage oil is high in anti-oxidants and healthy fats that help combats redness & inflammation while being super moisturizing, and The Buffet is a peptide formula to get a head start on those fine lines ;). Then into bed, I read fiction novels, all kinds, for about 15 minutes until I feel sleepy. Usually I’m out by 10:30pm!

Q: How do you like to unwind after a busy week?

A: Red wine. Haha, but actually I am very interested in wine! I've even taken a few courses in it. So I love opening up and savouring a good bottle on the weekends. And I love spending time cooking and relaxing with my husband and dog at home. I feel so fulfilled when I get to discuss my week with my partner. It's truly a gift.

Q: Do you have a favourite quote or mantra that you carry throughout your days?

A: When you get, give. When you learn, teach. I heard this on a podcast years ago and it's really resonated with me ever since. It encompasses my values of selflessness, knowledge sharing, and gratitude. I love learning new things and sharing that with people. Teaching is my calling.

Q: What's your favourite thing about social media when it comes to your job?

A: Social media can be a powerful tool to help others learn and share their own stories and experiences. I love highlighting others accomplishments! I also like to take a step back from the shiny surface of social media and remind myself that it's just supposed to be sharing your life, as it REALLY happens with others - your friends, family, clients etc. So I love to share authentically, as it happens.

Q: What does Healthy is Hot mean to you?

A: When my husband first met me, he would tell his friends I was his "hot" CrossFit Coach. I didn't really understand it never thinking of myself as a typical "hot girl". Now, I know it's because I placed (and still do) so much value in my physical, mental, and spiritual well being that I'm pretty sure that translates into "Healthy is Hot". When you take care of yourself, fully and completely you radiate, and that is definitely hot.
