How I Get Sh*t Done: Chloe Wilde
Do you have a role model you look up to? Maybe it’s your mom, or your grandma, or it could even be your best friend, or a mentor who has helped you in a sport, a job, or pretty much anything in life. I have a handful of really great role models (yes mom you’re one of them!) and today I get to interview one for a very special edition of HIGSD. April marks the first anniversary of ‘How I Get Sh*t Done’, and it wouldn’t have existed without this woman, our HIH founder Chloe Wilde. Chloe has been a role model to me longer than she probably knows. And when I finally got to meet her in person at the HIH meet up in summer of 2018, I felt like I was going to cry because it was like I had known her forever. She was an absolute delight to meet and chat with, and to this day, we still keep in touch and support each other via social media. This week, I got the chance to chat with Chloe and find out everything from what her morning routine looks like to the next exciting HIH venture coming to the site soon!
Q: It’s your average day, what does your morning routine look like?
A: If I’m not on the road, then my day typically kicks off with the alarm at 6:45am and straight to F45 or SAANA Yoga for a morning #HIHmoment, followed by an XL steeped tea from good ol’ Tim Hortons while I walk to work. Taking that 20-25 minutes to set the tone for the day. Rain or shine, I make the most of that walk by expressing gratitude for everything in my life. Breakfast is a non-negotiable, otherwise my blood sugar crashes and I get a serious dose of “hangry”; either overnight oats, egg bites or a protein shake to-go.
Q: You’re known as a reporter for etalk, but you wear so many different hats! Tell us a little bit about the different roles you have going on in your life!
A: My daily hat is being a reporter for etalk, where I film in studio for our nightly entertainment show or film in the field interviewing actors, designers, musicians, etc. It’s a job that has given me so many great opportunities and really allowed myself to develop my communication skills. Then, there is of course Healthy Is Hot, which started as a hashtag and has since turned into this incredible online community that I cherish from the bottom of my heart. HIH pushes me to be more creative, more entrepreneurial and a better woman every single day - in large part because of all of you. Then there’s being an ambassador for FINCA Canada, which supports women in marginalized countries get access to financial resources so they can build businesses (fruit stands to used clothing stalls at markets to restaurants). And of course, I can’t forget to mention that I am involved with an organization called WE and volunteer with the Special Olympics Canada at their Marathon of Sport, Motionball and Motionball Idol.
Q: How do you balance a social life (and your own quite personal time) with all these hats you wear?
A: Truthfully, my social life has taken a bit of a hit. It was a struggle to balance it all, so there’s less going out and girls nights than before. I wish I could say I’ve got the “balance” thing down to a science, but most of the time I’m slightly overwhelmed - which, if I'm being honest, I don’t mind. A slight sense of being overwhelmed keeps me alert, on my toes and forces me to prioritize and manage my time wisely. Regardless of how busy things get, quiet time is a must. My job requires me to be “on” a lot, which can be quite draining, so finding little quiet moments throughout the day, especially morning and night, are incredibly important to refuel for what’s next.
Q: What’s your favourite thing about working in TV?
A: That every day is a new adventure, where I get to interview passionate, driven, interesting, often quirky (!) individuals.
Q: What is your favourite way to get your #HIHMoment on?
A: Currently, it’s all about F45 and hot yoga at SAANA. But I am looking forward to getting back into regular running and biking to SWAT Health to see my trainer Kyle more often and Saturday morning classes at Myodetox Performance.
Q: What keeps you motivated at the gym?
A: Having a gym that is in close proximity to home or work is the best way I can stick to it, it makes it fool-proof and excuse-resistant. It really helps that my close friends and boyfriend are the best workout partners a girl could ask for.
Q: For someone who is on the go all the time, what’s your go to snack to have on hand?
A: Hard boiled eggs are always great on-the-go, cashews are my ultimate favourite snack and if I’m craving a treat but I’m trying to be good that day, I’ll grab a Goodfats bar.
Q: How has fitness changed your life?
A: I can’t imagine a life where fitness and #HIHmoments aren’t a regular occurrence. It has become the ultimate therapy for me, the way I unwind, the way I get in the right headspace for an important shoot, the way I shake off negative energy, the way I reflect on life and appreciate all the amazing things in the works. It may not always be easy to get to the gym, but it’s always worth it. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of leaving a workout knowing you just showed up for yourself, in the best way possible.
Q: How do you like to unwind after a long week?
A: A nice big goblet of red wine, popcorn, a great movie and cuddles with my man.
Q: You’re always giving me travelling goal when I look at your Insta, where’s your next adventure?!
A: Ireland for work and then Barcelona for play!
Q: As you know Chloe, you are such a huge role model for me personally, but I want to know, who is your biggest role model?
A: My mom, and my grandmother were and still are such role models to me. Both of them such strong, fierce women, and very different in their approaches to life. My Mom in particular is one of a kind, she has always been there for us, no matter what - life wasn’t always easy but through it all, she was there. When I told her I'd be taking time off from McGill University to do the MuchMusic VJ Search, she could have easily urged me to stay in school, but instead she talked it out with me and has supported me every step of the way.
Q: What advice would you have given your 20-year-old self?
A: Believe in yourself, believe it will all work out and be open to every opportunity that comes your way. Also, shut down the negative talk, you deserve better.
Q: What’s the next exciting venture for Healthy is Hot?!
A: A PODCAST baby! It’s been a minute since I’ve felt this connected and motivated about a project, there’s something really special about having chats with inspiring women about how they got to where they are and how health is a part of that story. Hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as I loved making it!
Q: And finally, my favourite question on HIGSD, what does Healthy is Hot mean to you?
A: It's ironic how I ask this question at the end of each #HIHPodcast episode, and every time I'm floored by how three little words can have such different, and equally powerful, meanings to each person. And yet, when I try to distill the feeling, thoughts and goals that come to mind when it is asked of me; it's difficult to put into words. Personally, HIH is a promise to myself that no matter what, I will always strive for health. And not just going to the gym. HIH is about making choices every day in regards to your physical health, nutritional health, mental health, and career health. Those little choices add up, those little increments of progress amount to lifelong habits where we can live our best lives every damn day.
