Why It’s Important to Use Your Vacation Days
As a millennial and having started a salary position just 3 years ago, I can definitely say that there have been times where I have been hesitant on using my vacation days, but why? I have them, why wouldn’t I jump at the opportunity to use them?
Reflecting on this, I’ve come to the terms that there is a lot to be expected of millennials, we are new to the workforce and there’s this ongoing pressure that we need to demonstrate a strong commitment to our job. Even when I do request vacation time I feel somewhat guilty, and have a fear of coming back to an overload of work, since with my job specifically, no one else can really fill in or takeover while I’m away.
After doing some research, I’ve come to discover that younger employees in the workforce are even afraid to ask and use their vacation days because of “vacation shaming”, which they might feel from their bosses or coworkers.
However, vacation time is important, it’s a time to take a break and clear your mind of your work duties and unwind. It’s important for your mental health, and it encourages you to come back to work motivated. As an employee in the workforce, I have to remind myself that it is okay to use your vacation days; they’re around for a reason! I would also like to encourage employers to encourage their staff to take time off, be aware of their hard work and understand that everyone needs a break to recharge and return with more creativity and determination to work.
Don’t hesitate to use your vacation days, everyone needs time off to be their best selves, to recollect themselves and return to work with a positive mindset.
