7 Healthy Restaurants in Toronto That Will Help You Reach Your Fitness Goals

Hey there, fit babes!

Did you know that eating HEALTHY doesn’t just mean eating meal preps out of storage containers!? 

That’s right! It’s 100% possible to eat for your BODY & GOALS - just by choosing the right restaurants, knowing which items on the menu will nourish you most, and practicing a liiiiitle bit of portion control. (And, if that’s not good news this summer - I don’t know what is!)

So, if you’re like me LOVE to try all the new, trendy & delicious restaurants in Toronto; but you also have GOALS and still want to look and feel your best after your meal, I’ve put together a quick lil’ list of seven restaurants around Toronto that I love to visit whenever I want something I KNOW will be super yummy, but also won’t make me feel guilty afterwards. ;) 

Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or a mainstream omnivore (like myself!), this list has my top dish picks for any diet type. Plus, I’ve also included some of my favourite grab & go snacks for when you just want something small to tide you over. That way, you can find something that suits YOU and your preferences - no matter where you go!

From smoothie bowls to poké bowls to everything in between, Calii Love seriously brings that bright, California sunshine and fruity & flavourful island vibe to Toronto through all of the fresh, healthy and sustainable menu picks they provide at their restaurant. You can really tell that the brand as a whole has a deep respect for the quality of their ingredients, the places they come from, and (obviously) the people coming to eat them!

Impact Kitchen takes real, minimally-processed, wholesome and nutritious foods to a deliciously tasty level through every smoothie, salad, bowl or baked good they provide. (I’m not kidding - it’s a whole lot of delicious, with zero guilt!) As a fully gluten-free kitchen with vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, and even paleo options to choose from, I think it’s safe to say they’ve created a pretty kick-ass menu that absolutely anyone can feel great about ordering from, no matter what your health goals are.

The Simple Kitchen is like walking into a nutritionist’s haven. They offer the most delicious food for absolutely any diet type - whether you’re Paleo, Keto, or Gluten-Free (just to name a few!) - made with real, fresh, and unprocessed ingredients. With so many creative boxes, salads, and bowls to choose from, you can pretty much get away with having any dish at this place without feeling like you’ve gone overboard. (And that’s usually pretty hard to do, considering they serve up some mouthwatering Paleo & Keto waffles!)

What’s even better is that, nestled inside of their humble walls, is their very own The Simple Market - a mini market filled with a wide variety of healthful products, pre-packaged snacks, supplements and superfoods so that you can take home all of that healthy goodness with you when your visit is over.

If you’re ever in the Roncesvalles area, make sure to stop by The Simple Kitchen. It truly is a hidden gem - and not one to be missed!

4. LAWAI’A POKE BAR

From the moment you walk in, the Hawaiian-inspired decor of Lawai’a Poke Bar takes you on a trip to the islands without even having to leave the city. Although it’s a small space that doesn’t boast very much in terms of seating, it’s the perfect place to stop by on your lunch break to pick up a healthy poké bowl - no matter where you’re heading next.

Their menu is filled with fresh, seasonal ingredients - all with a Hawaiian influence. (Think: salmon, yellowfin tuna, tofu, brown rice, raw veggies, edamame, jalapeños… etc.) They also offer a variety of Classic Bowls, or let you build your own to suit your exact preferences. Some build-your-own features that I personally love are swapping the brown rice for zucchini noodles (if you’re looking to reduce your carb intake), or going full-out “Hawaii Style” - which doubles the protein and removes the base altogether!

Fresh takes plant-based food to a whole new level - dishing out a fun, modern twist on your fave vegetarian and vegan eats, and serving up organic, cold-pressed juices, craft cocktails and made-to-order beverages. They offer amazing, mouth-watering selections using fresh, whole ingredients - like their most popular, and my personal fave, Quinoa Onion Rings! (Are they 100% healthy? No. But, are they 100% delicious? Hell yes!) They single-handedly prove that eating healthy, local, and plant-based meals doesn’t have to be bland or boring, and that it’s also okay to indulge once in a while.

Another thing I love about Fresh is that not only is their food creative, but they’re also extremely eco-friendly! Their straws, bags and take-away packaging are biodegradable and compostable, their used cooking oil is recycled to help provide green fuel for your vehicle, and their produce scraps and other biodegradable waste is composted. That way, you can not only feel good about the food you’re eating, but also about the impact you’re making on our environment, too!

iQ Food Co. is an innovative seasonal kitchen that serves up fresh, nutrient-rich, locally-sourced and (mostly) organic foods in the most creative and delicious way possible! From the moment you walk in, their walls are filled with various quotes, photographs and influences from all genres of art, music and design that infuse your entire experience with creativity and inspiration - beyond just the nourishing bowls, snacks and beverages they offer.

One of iQ’s main missions is to incorporate balance and sustainability into all of their cooking (which is something I can really get behind!). As a “seasonal” kitchen, all of their menu items change with the seasons, based on what foods are locally available. They are also dedicated to made from scratch cooking, using whole ingredients. And, although their menu is plant-forward, they take pride in serving up quality dairy, poultry, and fish for any dietary type or preference - so you can truly feel good about the food you’re eating while you’re there!

7. THE GREEN WOOD

Located in the East end of Toronto, The Green Wood is likely the furthest east I’ve been for an amazing, healthy meal - and yet, I think it’s safe to say that they are definitely worth the trek! 

Inspired by clean Mediterranean flavours, TGW meshes global flavours with comforting, down-to-earth home cooking in a fresh, locally-sourced and sustainable way. They are committed to partnering with local produce, dairy, poultry and fish suppliers to bring the freshest ingredients to your table. And, of course, I just HAVE mention that the restaurant is led and co-owned by a fearless female Chef, Elisa Corrigan. (Talk about girl boss!)

Although they currently only serve up breakfast and lunch for now, they’ve just announced that their long-awaited Dinner Menu will officially launch next month (July 2019)! This new menu (and extended hours) is said to include a combination of heartier and lighter dishes that stay true to their mission: to serve up the best locally-sourced, nutrient rich and sustainable comfort food in Toronto!
