How I Get Sh*t Done : Jojo Maisie
Meet Jojo Maisie! Growing up as a dancer and transitioning to fitness 5 years ago, Jojo leads by example and helps people learn how they can live their healthier lifestyle, and actually ENJOY the process! She’s a pilates instructor, a Barre instructor, a pre and post-natal fitness specialist and part of the #TeamFaster Puma ambassador team! What can’t this girl do! Oh, and she’s got her own program- On the Go w/JOJO, where she offers 1-on-1 coaching, group training and awesome workout videos to help you stay fit, wherever you are! This week, we chatted on everything from her recent love for sprinting to her go-to snacks she brings while traveling around the city training clients!
Q: What’s your average morning; tell us about your morning routine?
A: Most weekdays I am up between 5-6am to teach classes or train clients. My mornings are pretty basic and quick. I wake up, make coffee, feed my cat Mowgli, fill in my eyebrows and waltz out the door! When I don't teach in the morning I try to take a class at Barreworks, Loft Cycle Club, Barry's or Lagree. I love to start my day with a workout but often I'm helping others start their day with one (which I also love).
Q: What’s your favourite way to get your sweat on?
A: Oh boy! There are so many. Lately, sprint intervals. I love the endorphins from a short but intense workout. I am also a HUGE fan of barre, Pilates and weight training.
Q: What does your weekly fitness routine look like?
A: I workout 3-4 times per week. I weight train at least 2 times per week as well as 1 reformer Pilates session. Some weeks I will workout more but I really try to listen to my body and do what it needs at that time.
In the summer I try to walk everywhere. It makes me feel so good both physically and mentally. I always recommend my clients take 2 long walks a week, 20-30 minutes. Enjoy that Vitamin D that we barely get in Canada!
You’re constantly on the go, what’s your favourite snacks, smoothie place, coffee place, etc that you like to have on a busy day to keep you going?i
You got it! I am always on the go, which is why my business is called On The Go w/ JOJO. I bounce from client to teaching classes to my own workouts. My favorite on the go snacks are Simply Protein bars. They are high protein and low sugar. My fav on-the-go lunch is a large tupperware with fresh cut veggies, hard boiled eggs, sliced organic turkey, nuts, hummus and berries. It's easy to eat while driving around the city.
When you are busy and constantly on the go the most important thing is being prepared. It takes 10 minutes in the morning to set yourself up to have a successful day of eating. It's got to become one of those things you just do... like brushing your teeth. No matter how lazy/ tired you feel you always brush your teeth before bed. Try to have the same mentality around food prep.
Q: What’s your advice to women who may be a bit intimidated by the gym?
A: Follow a plan or hire a coach. Having a concrete plan to follow will boost your confidence and allow you to focus on the exercises as oppose to worrying about what you should do next. With a plan you are more likely to hit the gym consistently and stay on track. I also love to ease my clients into the gym by using free-weights only. It may sound backwards to some but the idea of using machines can be scary. Often we fear that people will judge us when we are fumbling around trying to figure out how the darn thing works. Free weights are easy to use and allow for a ton of variety in your workouts.
Q: What’s your favourite way to unwind after a long week?
A: In the summer I love going for walks around the city, exploring new neighborhoods, parks, trails etc. Walking is so underrated. If I am lucky I'll have my sister's puppy Matilda with me. Q: What’s your bedtime routine look like?
A: Since I wake up early, I go to bed early. If you are trying to become a morning person you 100% need to adjust your bedtime. I am in bed around 9-9:30pm. Before that I write down all of my next day to-dos in a real notebook (so I get the satisfaction of checking them off lol). I also pack my lunch and snacks for the following day and if I am really organized I'll lay out my clothes.
I am lucky that one of my clients is Margot Grant, from Elizabeth Grant Skincare. She's helped me so much with my skin care routine and teaching me about my skin. Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, eye cream and spot treatment. Phew! Thanks Margot.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice someone has given you?
A: Be patient and persistent. People who reach their goals do so because they just kept swimming.
Q: What’s next for you? (projects, aspirations, partnerships, etc)
A: I have a really exciting project that I am working on this summer to launch in September. I can't say too much now (sorry to be that person lol) but I can say it is going to be so useful to get you back on track after summer!
