Bugs for Breakfast: A Cricket Protein Powder Review & Recipe

From whey to soy to sprouted hemp, protein powders come in all forms and flavours. And they are everywhere! With the dozens of options, it’s hard to know which one is right for you, if any. Some are hard to digest, some taste like crap and others contain a bunch of additives. We know that including more protein in our diets has many benefits but it can be hard to do. As a lover of smoothies and proats (protein oatmeal), I wanted to explore a more natural form of protein powder, one that my body may be able to digest, absorb and use better. And one that is more sustainable. And just like that, crickets crawled into my life. Well not really, but I decided to give cricket powder a try. Consuming insects is not new to the world, however it’s a relatively new food source to Western cultures. Slowly crickets are making their way to our grocery store aisles and now you can order cricket powders, flours, bars and snacks online very easily.

Spicing up the soup game with African-fusion flavours and a love for sharing

Is there any food more universally comforting than a bowl of soup?

If you ask Lola Adeyemi, founder of It’s Souper, she’ll kindly tell you probably not and offer up one of her four Afro-Fusion gourmet soups to put the debate to rest. With an accomplished background in IT and no food industry experience, apart from her love of cooking, Adeyemi was craving to share something with the world that would not only fuel her entrepreneurial spirit but also appeal to a diverse community, something everyone could share in.

Easiest Weeknight Chicken Dinner

You know the phrase “winner winner chicken dinner”? Well, it repeats in my mind whenever I cook this dish because everyone I have made it for loves it. Plus the recipe is so simple. Delicious + easy = a win in my book!

I typically make this dish for my husband and I as a post-workout meal during the week. It’s also a great option if you’re having friends over for dinner because you prep it the night before, leaving you free to socialize with your guests (because who wants to be cooped up in the kitchen the entire night?). And clean up is a breeze because it’s just one pan. I wasn’t kidding when I said this was such a win!

Nicole's Recipes: Easy & Healthy Spaghetti

So last weekend, I was home alone for dinner and didn’t really know what to make. My parents were out for dinner so I didn’t have a lot of leftovers, and I didn’t feel like ordering in. It was a pretty chilly night, and I wanted something that would give me all the warm feels I needed to stay comfy and cozy! I really felt like pasta, but we had no pasta sauce on hand. So I looked at the ingredients I had in the kitchen, and whipped up this delicious and easy lemon shrimp pasta recipe that I can’t even believe I made myself! It turned out so well, it was so good and pretty healthy if I say so myself!

Kelly’s Vegan & Gluten-Free Oatmeal Flax Chocolate Chip Cookies

Winter is the perfect time for getting busy in the kitchen & baking healthy treats! Take it from me when I say that this recipe is the place to start! What’s better than a mouthwatering, warm, chocolatey, crispy on the outside but chewy on the inside cookie that’s filling, satisfying, nutritious & absolutely DELICIOUS?

These cookies are made with simple real food ingredients, vegan, gluten, dairy, refined sugar, dairy, egg & nut-free! They’re full of plant-based protein, fibre, good carbs, healthy fats & naturally sweet flavour… basically, what I’m trying to say is that you can’t go wrong with them! The best part? You can feel totally awesome about eating these because they’re actually good for you & won’t give you the same spike & crash in blood sugar as store-bought oatmeal cookies.

Without further ado, let’s get right to the recipe. I’d hate to make you wait any longer!

New Year’s Reset Smoothie

Getting back into the swing of things in the new year is never fun, everyone is tired, sick and coming off of a major sugar high. To help me bounce back from the mountains of cookies I’ve consumed over the last month and bikini body ready in 3 weeks (gasp) I’ve started following the Fab Four principles set by Kelly Leveque; focusing my meals around fat, fiber, protein and greens.
