Spring brings a sense of rejuvenation. Shaking ourselves off after a long, cold, dark winter. It’s time to get up and get after all the good things a little more sun and warmth inspire.
Spring more so than other seasons personally spark a sense of a refresh and transition for me personally, more than New Year’s or any other time of year. In this spirit, and thanks to several inspiring panels, networking events and talks I’ve been to in the past few months, I wanted to gather some advice and inspiration from some of the boss babes I’ve met and connected with recently. They are experts and leaders in fitness, wellness, beauty, business and entrepreneurship.Read More
I think it’s safe to say that we all know the importance of self-care. The notion that self-care is an act of selfishness is now gone (thank goodness!) and we have realized that it’s something to be practiced every day; a true necessity to living a healthy life. Self-care can take on so many different forms: exercise, cooking nutritious meals, manicures/pedicures, face masks (a personal favourite of mine), curling up with a good book, etc. But I think one self-care category that we tend to forget about is sleep. It’s not as fun as cooking or doing some spa treatments but arguably it’s the most important thing we can do for our bodies and our minds. But when we all have a to-do list that’s longer than there are hours in the day, how are we supposed to shut off our minds when we do finally crawl into bed at night?Read More
Derek came into my life about 6 years ago, as part of the creative team at Holt Renfrew. He instantly struck me as an exuberant soul with amazing energy. Through the years, I saw his relationship with his own identity and sexuality transform. He became more comfortable dressing as he wanted and identified more closely with his feminine side. As a heterosexual female, my sexuality has never caused me any stress. I leave my house in the morning and society simply accepts who I am. Members of our LGTBQ community often experience unjust judgement which can result in debilitating self-image issues that can lead to depression and anxiety. In a 2011 interview with Pride Source, Beyoncé acknowledged the difficulty of coming out and said that she was in awe of her LGBTQ fans. “The amount of confidence and fearlessness it takes to do what maybe is not what your parents expect you to do or what society may think is different -- to be brave and be different and to be yourself -- is just so beautiful,” she said. “Not worrying about satisfying or becoming what other people think you’re supposed to be, that’s like the ultimate dream.”Read More
With the turn of the new season, I really tried to focus on improving the quality of my sleep. I reached a breaking point in March, and that was when I realized how badly I was struggling to wake up in the morning. I’ve always been a light sleeper, but usually I can wake up and take on my day with no problems. Lately, this has not been the case. If I’m being completely honest, I was starting to get fed up.
The plan was simple. Cut off all technology before sleeping for 5 days during the workweek & observe how I felt the next day. I wasn’t worried about putting away my phone at night, but I’ve spent years falling asleep watching shows on my laptop...I knew this wouldn’t be easy.Read More

Some days it can feel hard to get up and do a workout. As a student, my days are filled with long lectures and lots of assignments. Sometimes fitness can take a backseat. But lately I’ve gotten into a routine that allows me to balance being active and getting all of my school work done. Things can get crazy and I forget just how important it is to keep my body moving and how much better and more focused I feel when I get some type of physical activity in during my day. Here are some of my tips for balancing fitness and school.Read More
Do you have a role model you look up to? Maybe it’s your mom, or your grandma, or it could even be your best friend, or a mentor who has helped you in a sport, a job, or pretty much anything in life. I have a handful of really great role models (yes mom you’re one of them!) and today I get to interview one for a very special edition of HIGSD. April marks the first anniversary of ‘How I Get Sh*t Done,” and it wouldn’t have existed without this woman, our HIH founder Chloe Wilde. Chloe has been a role model to me longer than she probably knows. And when I finally got to meet her in person at the HIH meet up in summer of 2018, I felt like I was going to cry because it was like I had known her forever. She was an absolute delight to meet and chat with, and to this day, we still keep in touch and support each other via social media. This week, I got the chance to chat with Chloe and find out everything from what her morning routine looks like to the next exciting HIH venture coming to the site soon!Read More
I’ve always had a sweet tooth. Sometimes I struggle to understand people who prefer savoury things (do they know how good dessert is?!) But I realized a few months ago that I don’t actually have a sweet tooth — I have a “chocolate tooth.” Case in point: if I’m out to dinner with my husband or friends and we share a dessert that doesn’t have chocolate in it, nine times out of ten I will still want chocolate when I get home. The struggle is real, people!Read More
Hi fam! It's Nicole, creator and writer of the HOW I GET SH*T DONE series on Healthy is Hot. This week marks one year since kicking off the series! One year ago I was having dinner with my friend Madison Pizer. We were talking about our jobs and she was telling me about her multiple ventures, including her part-time at Aritizia and founding her own jewelry line where she makes all it herself. I found myself thinking to myself ‘how the hell does she get everything done in her freaking days with everything she’s got going on?’ And then I thought to myself that would actually be a really interesting thing to ask people. About a week later, I pitched the idea to HIH, asked Madison if she would be my first interview, and HIGSD was born!
Today I wanted to celebrate the one year mark of this beloved series by showing you all 36 (and soon to be 37) of the interviews, and share a few of my favourite answers some of them have given! So let’s get into it!Read More
Urban Meets Erban started as a lifestyle blog. Mind you, the blog has taken a short break as I wrap my head around the brand and the upcoming years. It’s now transitioned over into Instagram where my blog posts are condensed into captions – albeit lengthy captions. At the end of the day, I’m just sharing my journey as I head down this road to self-confidence.Read More
Your life today is essentially the sum of your habits. How happy or unhappy you are? A result of your habits. How successful or unsuccessful you are? A result of your habits. What you repeatedly do makes you the person you are. It is so easy to focus on defining moments and underestimate the value of making better decisions on a daily basis. The daily choices we make shape us. Change your habits and you’ll change your life.Read More
When it comes to life, I personally believe in taking a real hard look at the situation(s) you're in and being realistic with yourself. This book is all about taking a realistic approach to your life, no matter what situation you're in.
Everyone in life has problems. You could have all the money in the world but it will never make you happy if you're not happy with yourself. You really need to work hard on yourself as an individual and being realistic with yourself is the first step.Read More
Hello HIH family, Chloe Wilde here!
I am very excited to share that we have been working hard behind-the-scenes on a special project that will share our sentiment that healthy is f*cking beautiful to the masses, through a PODCAST. That’s right, now you’ll be able to soak up HIH magic while walking to work, out on a jog, running errands or stuck on public transit.
So... what can you get excited about?Read More
April will mark the one-year anniversary of my series, 'How I Get Sh*t Done' (so crazy!). So I decided to go back to my first interview ever, to the woman who made me ask the question 'how the heck does she get it done all in one day'- Madison Pizer. I've known Madison for a few years now, and she's always been a busy woman. We look back at what happened in one year, talk about her go to product to get her ever-so glowy skin, and much more!Read More
Although summer may seem miles away, I thought I would get you a little excited about those hot days by introducing you to sailing. Now I am not talking about the captain’s hat and booze cruising sailing, I am talking about the physically demanding, mentally challenging, Olympic class sailing.
Sailing seems to have been in my life for as long as I can remember. My dad is a sailor, and a pretty great one at that. I am pretty thankful that he chucked me in a boat at a young age, and although I may have lost my favourite pink flamingo hat one my first outing, I soon fell in love with it and it has become part of my identity.
The sailing community in Canada is so close knit, and I was lucky enough to cross paths with Sarah Douglas a few years back when I was working in Toronto as the head coach at a sailing club there. At the time she was on the Ontario Sailing Team and I have been so excited to see her progress and be a total inspiration to young sailors across the country.
I was able to steal some time in her very busy schedule to get some questions in, and I hope you enjoy virtually meeting Sarah!Read More
If there is anything that I have struggled with lately, it’s turning off my mind when it’s time to go to sleep. Does anyone else have this same problem? It feels like all day there is an energy deficit, and I am so sleepy… but of course, night hits, and all of a sudden I am wide-awake.
This affects me the next day in a few ways. Not only do I find it difficult to wake up, but I also hit a wall as soon as I get home from work where I feel the need to sleep right away. I have experienced this type of insomnia before during times of stress, and it’s easy to feel like this is out of my control.Read More
As a chiropractor and fitness coach, I often ask patients and clients the following questions - Do you wake up the day after a workout feeling stiff and sore? Is your desk job a (literal) pain in the neck? Are you getting headaches after an upper body workout or a long day at work? If the answer is yes, there are many factors to consider – sleep, stress, hydration, nutrition, ergonomics and self-care, to name a few. One of them may be recurrent or chronic tension. If that’s the case, which for most people is at least part of the reason, it might be time to consider foam rolling as part of your daily routine. Your body will thank you!Read More
