My Top Summer Skincare Tips

We all love summer - but, our skin might not feel the same way. So, let’s go over how you can modify your skincare routine to keep a healthy summer glow that your skin will love, too!

Protecting your skin is IN

SPF (AKA Sun-Protection Factor) is super important to help fight those wrinkles and sun damage, so here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing the right sunscreen:

  1. Make sure it has broad-spectrum coverage. This means it filters both UVA and UVB rays!

  2. Look for mineral-based sunscreens (such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), which block UV radiation from penetrating the skin barrier. Look for the cleanest formulas with few other ingredients!

  3. Non-comedogenic formulas are a good choice especially if you’re prone to blackheads and acne, as these are less likely to clog your pores.

  4. Look for an SPF of 30 and above to make sure you’re getting enough protection! A higher SPF will protect your skin more from burning, but re-application during the day is important. Your skin will be less protected from sun damage if you’re not applying it properly.

  5. If you’re using something like retinol or AHAs at nighttime, SPF needs to be applied each morning to prevent photosensitivity and irritation caused by sun exposure.

  6. Don’t forget your lips!! This is an area we can easily forget, but it’s still just as susceptible to sun damage. Look for a lip balm with SPF 30, and apply regularly to your entire lips throughout the day!

How much sunscreen should you apply? A good rule of thumb is to apply 2-3 tablespoons on your body, and 1-2 teaspoons on your face and décolletage.

PRO TIP: make sure you still apply sunscreen on those cloudy, rainy days! UV rays can still penetrate through clouds, so don’t ignore your SPF! Keep some cute bucket hats and big shades handy for those super sunny days, too ;)

By protecting your skin this way, you can help prevent photo-damage such as hyperpigmentation and fine lines.

Your skin needs hydration!

Summer heat can also dehydrate our skin! You can combat this by including a daily hyaluronic acid in your skincare routine to hydrate your skin barrier, leaving your skin feeling plump and full! And of course, make sure to hit your water goals (if you want to be super accurate - divide your weight in half to give you the number of ounces you should be drinking daily).

Choose your makeup wisely

Heavy, non-comedogenic makeup + sweat = a recipe for breakouts. Avoid this by simplifying your makeup routine for summer months. Instead of using a heavy foundation, maybe switch to a tinted moisturizer with SPF, or use a concealer as spot treatment. Powder formulas will also withstand heat better and are less likely to melt into your pores!

Vitamin C

You may also consider adding a Vitamin C serum into your daily routine! This antioxidant can help protect against UV rays, support the skin barrier, and reduce pigmentation from sun damage. Apply this before other serums/moisturizer and SPF in the mornings.

Keep your skin CLEAN!

Summer brings the heat, humidity, and SWEAT. For our skin, this can lead to excess grime and sebum (oil). This is why it’s even more important to wash your face and clean those pores! If you’re layering product onto a dirty face, your skincare routine may backfire, causing more breakouts than usual.

And if you do end up getting too much sun (hey, it happens!), opt for soothing anti-inflammatory topicals like rosewater, aloe, and gentle face oils to accelerate healing!
